چکیده

Objective: Previous work has shown regional homogeneity (ReHo) differences in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients. So looking in more detail at differences between early and late stages is valuable. The aim of our study was to investigate brain activity of early and advanced PD in the resting state by using a ReHo approach. Methods: Functional magnetic resonance images were acquired in 35 patients with PD at in early stage and advanced stage, as well as in 17 ageand sex-matched normal controls (NC). Results: In PD patients compared with NC, we observed decreased ReHo in motor cortex and increased ReHo in the right cuneus and frontal eye field. In early stage of PD, decreased ReHo was located in bilateral posterior insular cortex, dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, angular gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, left precuneus, right superior temporal gyrus, and right cerebellar posterior lobe, in addition to motor cortex; and increased ReHo in the left cerebellar anterior lobe. During disease evolution, decreased ReHo was found in more brain areas, including right cerebellar posterior lobe, bilateral orbitofrontal cortex, gyrus rectus and left middle and inferior temporal gyrus; and increased ReHo in bilateral middle occipital gyrus, insular cortex, cingulate gyrus, superior temporal gyrus, and right middle temporal gyrus and thalamus. Whereas no changes were observed in bilateral motor cortex. Conclusion: Our results indicate that neuronal activity decrease in motor cortex with no marked variation during disease progression in a resting state, and decreased cognitive function may be associated with worsening motor symptoms in PD.

Brain Activity Map Extraction of Neuromyelitis Optica Patients Using Resting-State fMRI Data Based on Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations and Regional Homogeneity Analysis

Introduction: Neuromyelitis Optica (NMO) is a rare inflammatory disease of the central nervous system which generally affecting the spinal cord and optic nerve. Damage to the optic nerve can result in the patient's dim vision or even blindness, while the spinal cord damage may lead to sensory and motor paralysis and the weakness of the lower limbs in the patient. Magnetic Reson...

Resting-state Functional Connectivity During Controlled Respiratory Cycles Using Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the effect of controlled mouth breathing during the resting state using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Methods: Eleven subjects participated in this experiment in which the controlled “Nose” and “Mouth” breathings of 6 s respiratory cycle were performed with a visual cue at 3T MRI. Voxel-wise seed-to-voxel maps and whole-brain region of i...

Brain Activity Map Extraction from Multiple Sclerosis Patients Using Resting-State fMRI Data Based on Amplitude of Low Frequency Fluctuations and Regional Homogeneity Analysis

Introduction: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common non-traumatic neurological diseases of young adults. MS often reported during ages 20-62. MS affects the various anatomical parts of the central nervous system. Up to 65% of multiple sclerosis patients MS patients suffer from various problems, such as fatigue, depression, pain and sleep disorders. Unlike MRI, that only sh...

Increased regional homogeneity of blood oxygen level-dependent signals in occipital cortex of early blind individuals.

Although resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging has shown altered functional connectivity between visual and other brain areas in the early blind individuals, it cannot answer which brain area's local activities are changed. In this study, regional homogeneity, a measure of the homogeneity of the local blood oxygen level-dependent signals, was used for the first time to investigate...

Op-brai130007 1..16

Brain activity during rest is characterized by slow (0.01–0.1 Hz) fluctuations of blood oxygenation level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging signals. These fluctuations are organized as functional connectivity networks called resting-state networks, anatomically corresponding to specific neuronal circuits. As Parkinson’s disease is mainly characterized by a dysfunction of the senso...
